Pomeranian History: The Pomeranian is known to have existed around the eighteenth century in Germany. The Pomeranian resembles the much larger sled-pulling Spitz type dogs from the Arctic Circle, which they are said to have descended from. The Pomeranian was first introduced to Britain in the 19th century weighting around 30 lbs. After several appeals from different Pomeranian clubs, the breed Standard was reduced to 7lbs. It is said that Queen Victoria was much taken with the breed and had a number of the larger variety in her kennels Pomeranian puppies.

Grooming a Pomeranian puppy   can be somewhat demanding as it requires regular attention. Basically, the tools that you need to keep it clean and attractive are slicker/pin brush, medium-tooth metal comb, scissors and cotton buds. You can give treats and play with your Pomeranian puppy  while grooming it so that it will enjoy the activity.

A Pomeranian's coat has to be brushed regularly to maintain its floppiness and ball-like appearance. Brushing him 2 to 3 times a week would be sufficient to prevent dry skin and dandruff. When brushing the Pomeranian puppy , you should lift its outer coat so that the bristles start at the root of the hair, and you can brush it down and outwards. When a Pomeranian puppy is shedding, you will need to do extra brushing; however, you should keep in mind that you need to wet the coat before brushing it. It's better to mist the coat first with water before brushing to prevent its coat from matting. If you wish, you may add a small amount of conditioner to the water.

A bristled or a pin brush is recommended for brushing. All loose hair must be removed so that your Pomeranian puppy  will not get a matted coat, which would require clipping to remove. For the purpose of cleanliness, be sure to clip the hair around your Pomeranian's anus. Make sure you pay attention to the area behind its ears and groin as these parts are prone to tangles and curls. Lift and part the overcoat and brush the fluffy undercoat. This will help reduce shedding. Regular trimming is also required to keep its coat looking good. You must keep your Pomeranian free of parasites and fleas as these will cause it to itch, and will make the dog scratch and bite its coat, resulting in matted hair.

Bathing your Pomeranian puppy can be very effective in preventing skin irritations. You should bathe your dog on a regular basis to wash off dirt and dust as they are abrasive to its coat. However, don't bathe it excessively; bathing twice a month is recommended. Excessive bathing can be risky for its skin and could even remove essential oils, adding to the problem of matted coat.

Proper grooming always includes checking the ears and nails of your Pomeranian puppy. It is necessary to use cotton buds for its ears. You should also keep the nails as short as possible, so trim them at least once every three months. If nails are not trimmed regularly, there is a tendency that they will grow inside the dog's flesh. When this happens, your dog may need to undergo surgery.

Don't be afraid to clip your dog's nails if you haven't tried clipping them before. Avoid clipping the soft part of your dog's nail called the quick, which is the pinkish part of the nail near the base. You want to avoid clipping that because it will cause bleeding and great pain for your dog. If your dog's nail is darker in color, it's better to cut one small piece at a time and work your way in until you are almost at the quick.

Pomeranian Puppy Tooth Care:

Caring for a dog's teeth is a routine that many breeders have used for years, but that is just now becoming common with dog owners. Just like people, different dogs and different breeds of dog will have stronger and healthier teeth than others. In addition some foods, especially soft foods such as canned and semi-moist foods may not provide the scraping action needed to remove tartar and plaque from the teeth, resulting in poor dental conditions that can result in early tooth loss, problems with infections in the mouth, gum disease and even digestive disorders.

In a dog's wild, natural state a large percentage of their food would be meaty bones or fiber type items such as fruits and vegetables and even chewing on grasses. These natural food items, particularly bones, act as abrasive substances that work to scrape the plague off the teeth and keep the gums healthy. In canned or semi-moist foods not only is there a higher chemical component that may lead to tooth damage and decay, but there is also no abrasion against the teeth by the food as the dog eats. The result is that particles of the moist foods lodge between the teeth with nothing in the dog's diet to scrape them off. Just like with people, the longer the food sits against the tooth enamel the greater the chance for tooth decay will be.

Often the first signs of dental problems and issues is the noticeable discoloration of the teeth close to the gum line. This can range in color from a yellowish discoloration through to a deep caramel or even dark brown to black color along the gum line and up over the teeth. Usually by this advanced stage there is also a highly noticeable irritated, bright red area around the tooth in the gums. With severe dental issues there may also be bleeding from the gums, foul smelling breath and teeth that are very loose or that begin to fall out. Tooth loss is very serious in dogs because it will limit the kinds of foods that they can eat and can possibly lead to nutritional problems as the dog ages.

Thankfully there are some simple steps that Pomeranian Puppy,  and puppy owners can use to help their Pomeranian Puppy, 's avoid or minimize tooth decay. Some of the easy and fun tips and tricks are to provide your Pomeranian Puppy,  with abrasive, safe things to chew while playing or while they are alone. Nylon Pomeranian Puppy,  bones, meaty knuckle bones, and specialized toys that are texturized to provide a scraping action on the teeth are ideal. There are also several types of dental bones or edible dental chew treats that are designed to provide this natural scraping action that are great for between brushing treats. They are not effective in removing already established plaque deposits that are advanced in size.

Dental Supplies

There are few dental supplies that the Pomeranian Puppy,  owner will need to start this routine. The younger you start your puppy the better, even before they get their permanent teeth is ideal. The basic supplies include a specially shaped Pomeranian Puppy,  tooth brush or soft baby toothbrush, a specialized finger sleeve and some Pomeranian Puppy, gy toothpaste. Avoid using human toothpaste as the strong flavors of human toothpaste is not usually appreciated by the Pomeranian Puppy,  or puppy and can result in a bad experience for the Pomeranian Puppy, , making tooth brushing more challenging.

Puppy Dental Routines

Starting your puppy with regular, twice weekly or every other day tooth brushing routines is a wonderful idea that only takes a few minutes. Many people include the dental cleaning in the grooming program and it just becomes part of the puppies routine.

The first step of the program is to get the puppy used to having fingers in his or her mouth, or a very small toothbrush. Puppies will, of course, want to chew on either item, so they must be treated very gently but also understand that this is not a game. Start by simply rubbing your fingers over the front teeth and rewarding the puppy for not biting or mouthing. Doing this after feeding is a good idea as the puppy is less inclined to want to play and may be very relaxed and even a bit sleepy. Once the puppy is comfortable with the front teeth, gradually move around to the side, being very careful not to hit the gums or push too far to the back of the mouth to cause discomfort.

Once the puppy is calm with this, add either the toothbrush or a finger sleeve, which is just a texturized cloth finger that slips over your index finger. Add a bit of toothpaste and stroke gently against the teeth, paying particular attention to the gum line. The whole process should only take a minute or two. Provide a healthy dental treat as a reward when you have finished.

Pomeranian Puppy,  Dental Routines

If the Pomeranian Puppy,  has been trained from a puppy, typically they are calm and will sit willingly for their dental routine. If the Pomeranian Puppy,  has never had their teeth brushed, this may be a bit of a new and maybe even stressful event. Start, like with puppies, in having the Pomeranian Puppy,  comfortable with you handling their muzzle and mouth area. Use your finger to gently rub the teeth in the front of the mouth, then gradually move to the sides. To get to the inside surface of the teeth the Pomeranian Puppy,  will need to open his or her mouth, which will usually be a natural occurrence if the Pomeranian Puppy,  feels comfortable and safe with the owner.

If the Pomeranian Puppy,  snaps, bites or growls you may need to work more on the desensitization as they may be nervous and afraid of what is happening. For mature Pomeranian Puppy, s that are very uncomfortable having and extra person to help hold the Pomeranian Puppy,  may be required for the first few times, but it is really much better to go slowly and make the Pomeranian Puppy,  feel comfortable rather than trying to force the issue.

Pomeranian Appearance

The head of the Pomeranians is wedge-shaped, making it somewhat foxy in appearance. The ears are small and set high. Its tail is characteristic of the breed and should be turned over the back and carried flat, set high. When born, the tail is not spread out; it may take months for it to grow over the Pomeranian's back, and flatten. Beneath the Pomeranian's fur is a small but muscular dog, similar in appearance to a Chihuahua dog.

The Pomeranians coat is its glory, two coats, an  undercoat and atop coat; the first is soft, thick, and fluffy; the latter is long, straight and coarse. The undercoat is shed once a year by males, by intact females when they are in season, after delivering a litter, and during times of stress.

The AKC recognizes thirteen colors or color combinations for Pomeranians: black, black & tan, blue, blue & tan, chocolate, chocolate & tan, cream, cream sable, orange, orange sable, red, red sable, and sable. The Pomeranians that have 2 or more colors (usually mostly white, with others), are called "Parti-Color".

The AKC also recognizes five "alternative" colors: Beaver, brindle, chocolate sable, white, and wolf sable.

One breed standard calls for a cobby, balanced   Pomeranian. A cobby dog is as long or shorter than it is tall; try to picture it as a circle in a square. A balanced Pomeranian fits together logically and in proportion. For instance, a small, delicately boned Pomeranian puppy  with a large head looks unbalanced because its head type doesn't match its body type. A balanced Pomeranian  displays legs in proportion to its body: neither so short as to make him appear dumpy nor so long as to make it look like he is walking on stilts.

This standard also calls for an expression that imparts great intelligence, showing that the Pomeranian  has an alert character and that he behaves accordingly. The Pomeranian’s alertness makes it a superb watchdog, and a great companion, However they are very feisty and stubborn at times (they need a lot of attention).

Pomeranian Temperament

The Pomeranians is a very active dog who is intelligent, courageous, and a loyal companion. They can be trained to be good watchdogs. The Pomeranians is confident, commanding, and outgoing. Due to the Pomeranian's small stature, they are not recommended for homes with small children as they may become temperamental.

Pomeranian Care:  In addition to grooming it is important for Pomeranians to receive excellent dental care. They are prone to tooth loss; so regular cleaning is a must. Dry food is recommended to aid in keeping teeth and gums healthy.
Pomeranian Training:  Pomeranians respond best to firm commands and are quick to learn. They are easily trained in obedience. Their barking must be controlled or they will do so incessantly. They may be difficult in housebreaking, but with consistency and praise do very well either going outside or in a litter box.
Activity:  The Pomeranian requires short walks and play time with other pets and family. They have the capability to learn tricks if done with patience and time. They may become bored if they are not given enough to do. They are excellent for apartment living and homes with small yards.
